Deep Dive vs. Skimming the Seas

fork-int-the-road.jpgWhen I started this blog everyone advised me to formulate a professional tone and to find my niche. That’s not as easy as it sounds, web2.0 is quite a crowded pond with a lot of big fish!

I realized a few days ago that I was having a hard time coming up with a regular stream of blog posts that related directly to technology because technology was only part of what I did.

One of the reason I love being self employed, is the ability to dabble and sample as many different experiences as possible. We live in an informational age where knowledge is endless and the result as been a rush to micro-specialize. Experts in minutia, or deep divers do have their place. I guess I’ve just been too much of a dabbler to really appreciate it. I prefer to sample from a wide variety of knowledge pools and feel that this integrative approach helps establish a perspective that explores alternative avenues to problem solving.

It’s also a lot more fun, and it’s always exciting.

The second thing I realized is that while I could establish yet another blog that discusses the impacts of New Media and Web 2.0 (I hate that word), I would simply be following the masses. This goes against one of my main philosophies in life: If you follow you’ll always be a step behind.

So what does this mean?  This means I could either go on as before, or choose a new direction; one better suited to me. This means I’m changing the focus of this blog to examine my self proclaimed playground, of which only one aspect is technology. I’ll also be adding random revelations like this one as I acclimate to my new status as “boss of me.”

If nothing else, I think I will take great pleasure in documenting my adventures. I also want my blog to reflect my voice: a laid back, sometimes sarcastic, tongue in cheek commentary on what I see around me.
